The Whens, Wheres, and Whys

Wondering what to do with that jump rope you've saved for a "Strawberry Shortcake" contest?  Or those boxes of pens you've stored in your desk's bottom drawer?  Give kids in Haiti the school supplies they need!

When: Thursday, October 28 · 3:30pm - 9:00pm
Where: NYU Bookstore, at 726 Broadway, New York, NY

Why:
When Haiti, the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, was hit with a shattering earthquake last January, countless Americans and others around the world rushed to send their support.  It's nearly nine months later now, and the disaster has faded from public consciousness.  But Haiti still needs our help!

That's where you come in.  We're not looking for your dollars, just your school supplies.  School's started, but without some of the supplies integral to the experience.  Keep Haiti fresh in mind and take those extra school supplies to Oxfam's Haiti School Supplies Fundraiser.

Here at Oxfam America at NYU, we're partnering with the AFYA Foundation (afyafoundation.org) to get the school supplies we collect to where it's needed most in Haiti.  Come join us at NYU's bookstore on Thursday, October 28th, for an afternoon and evening of free activities and food (that's right!...free food!) as we join together to bring school supplies to Haiti.

So, what can you donate?:
Matching socks
Shoes
Hair things (for girls)
Pencils
Pens
Balls
Jump ropes
Arts and crafts supplies (including paper, glue, safety scissors, crayons, markers, colored pencils, construction paper, etc).
PLEASE DO NOT BRING ANY CLOTHING ITEMS OTHER THAN ITEMS LISTED ABOVE.

Don't forget the fun stuff!
While we're collecting supplies, we'll bring you some FREE food...rumor has it, cookies will be involved.

The event will be broken up into two parts: fun activities for kids in the afternoon; an informative lecture and presentation about Haiti for adults later on.  Big kids and little kids alike, don't fear--the food will last throughout the whole night.

For kids:  Once school's out that afternoon in New York, come down to the bookstore and donate those supplies.  You can expect some arts and crafts fun for your kids while they get involved with helping kids in Haiti.

For adults:  Some wonderful speakers will give insight into the situation in Haiti and how we all can help.

Stay tuned for more information as we hammer out the details.

The fundraiser will be held in the event space at the back of the bookstore--when you enter, walk all the way to the back of the store, or ask some of our helpful Oxfam volunteers to point you in the right direction.  ...But don't worry, we'll remind you about that when we get closer to the event.

Get out your school supplies, and mark your calendars now!  We look forward to seeing you help out for Haiti!
